The Green Reaper was first conceptualized and created during the October game jam for the Game Craft club at the University of Utah. The game jam's theme was harvest and ran for 48 hours, and our team was composed of 9 team members. Made up of equal parts designers, artists, and programmers, our team first conceptualized the idea of an incremental game focused on a vegan grim reaper that has moved on to harvesting plants instead of souls.
Over the next 48 hours we quickly prototyped and designed a fairly simplistic game. We included powerups that the player could buy using gold they received from harvesting corn. We knew we wanted varied health/reward for certain corn types, powerups that could be placed around the field, and a quota based objective. Most aspects of our first build were discussed quickly and decided on early so we would have time to implement everything. The art style was decided early based on our artists skill sets. The vibrant colors and ghostly plants were conceptualized with an otherworldly environment in mind.
Through a scrambly finish, we were able to complete a wrapped build for the end of the game jam. Posted on Itch.io, our game received an exciting amount of feedback and participation. Based on the interests of the players, and that of our team, we decided to continue the development of The Green Reaper with a more fleshed out and complete product in mind.
We are excited to continue development on this game and will continue to post dev log updates as we progress.
